HBM races into “pole position” with transmission technology

PMS minienvironment monitorTorque and engine speed are the key parameters to measure in testing and optimising engines. In the highest motor racing class of all, Formula One, the demands on the engine, gear box and transmission components are extremely high, and using the correct measuring equipment takes on an even greater importance. HBM’s new torque flange has already passed its baptism of fire on the test benches of a number of Formula One engine manufacturers at speeds ranging from 18,000 rpm to 20,000 rpm. The new sensor technology in the transducer is patent protected and is designed to measure higher engine speeds and smaller external diameters than previous transducers. In addition, the new transducer provides increased accuracy and reproducibility and its space-saving design helps reduce test-bench costs. HBM also supplies torque flanges to manufacturers of engines for standard production vehicles, such as BMW, who recently selected HBM’s torque transducers and instrumentation as the standard measuring system for their new engine test stand facility in Munich as a result of its precision and reliability.
